LATTE BOMBS- herbal lattes for postpartum healing

Welcome to this is quick and easy recipe I’ve been using to support my pregnant & postpartum client. I like it so much because it’s low teach, low cost, high nutrient profile, and deeply delicious.

There’s also nothing more loving than bringing someone a fresh latte while they breastfeed their baby in bed.

A lot of people in their postpartum window are still sensitive to caffeine, so this is a good way for them to enjoy that hot, milky beverage without any adrenaline spikes or energy crashes.

I make a big batch once a week, bag up the ice cubes, and bring them to my postpartum home visits. That way I can make them a latte during our session, and they can make them on their own throughout the week!

I use Rose and Chamomile for specific, perinatal reasons too:

Rose is an astringent, meaning that it has a drying, tonifying quality. Rose is lovely for postpartum because it helps draw out excess fluid that the body may be holding onto from pregnancy, ie edema, placenta fluid, swelling in the limbs, etc.

Rose has also been shown to quell bleeding and tonify the uterus, which makes it an incredibly ally for the immediate postpartum, a time which latent bleeding can still occure via lochia. It’s also damn delicious and just feels luxurious to interact with.

Chamomile is a grand soother and neutralizer to the nervous system. Birth can be stressful to the body on a physiological and mental level, which is why nourishing birthers with nervines like chamomile, rose, lavender, etc. can be so impactful for new mothers and parents.

The Latin phrase for Chamomile is Matricaria chamomilla. The root “Matri” is Latin for matrix, or womb. In ancient herbalism practices, chamomile was often sought after as a regular medicine to soothe uterine cramping.

I didn’t know this when I was first crafting this recipe, but the discovery makes it all the more special :)

I hope you love this recipe and that it serves you and the circle of care in your postpartum community.

Happy brewing!

RECIPE

Ingredients:

- 2 tablespoons dried rose petals

- 2 tablespoons dried chamomile flowers

- 6 cups water

- Honey

- Milk of your choice (dairy, almond, oat, etc.)

Instructions:

1. In a pot, combine the dried rose petals and chamomile flowers. Add four cups of water to the pot and bring the water to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

Allow the flowers to steep for 10-15 minutes.

2. Sweeten with Honey:

While the infusion is still warm, add 2-3 tablespoons of honey, adjusting the amount to your preferred sweetness.

3. Strain the Infusion:

Strain the herbal infusion to remove the rose petals and chamomile flowers, and pour the tea into ice cube trays. I like to use these Houdini Silicone trays which make ice cube removal really easy.

Freeze the trays and save for a rainy day, or gift them to a newly pregnant or postpartum friend in your community for easy, nourishing lattes!

** When you're ready to enjoy your herbal latte, melt 2-3 cubes over low heat until melted. While the cubes are melting, heat the milk of your choice in another saucepan or using a milk frother.

Froth your milk until it becomes nice and airy. Pour over the hot tea, and sprinkle rose petals for an extra sweet touch.

Serve and Enjoy!
